What Did You Do Thanksgiving Eve

THANKSGIVING WAS A fun day, but so was the night before. I finally got a chance to visit the Freakin’ Frog on S. Maryland Pkwy. It’s across from UNLV so it gets it fair share of college students, which by the way, enjoy jazz as much as anyone else. The only difference is that they drink beer instead of martinis. So the Freakin’ Frog has dozens and dozens of beers. I ordered the only thing I could pronounce. Next time I’ll try a fancier one. Now on to the music. I can only talk about Wednesday night and John Nasshan’s QUINTESSENCE. Just a cool bunch of birds playing their thing.  The definition of quintessence is; “the purest or most perfect example of something”, and that’s what John and the guys aim for. By the way, the guys are; Walt Blanton-trumpet, Dave Stambough-sax, Tony Branco-piano, Jeff Davis-bass and of course, KUNV 91.5 FM radio host John Nasshan on drums. The band is composed of accomplished musicians, and it shows. The music starts around 9, so catch a nap before heading out. It’ll be worth it.

And The Angels Sang

Who said jazz is hard to find in Vegas? I guess they haven’t heard Gary Anderson and the guys playing around town.

Last night, true heart felt jazz was happening at Tony Sacca’s “Las Vegas Rocks Café” on Freemont Street. For the dozen or so lucky souls, we were treated to the best… I don’t know what else to say. It was a, “you had to be there” moment. Mark Speights-guitar, Uli Geissendoerfer-piano, Fearless Fred Watstein-bass, John Plows-drums and Gary Anderson-sax, led the way for one of the best jazz singers of our time. The angels spoke to me last night through the performance of Michaelina. When you hear her sing, you know she is singing from her soul. It’s not something you can be taught. You either have it or you don’t. She’s got it. She’s got it so that she has been asked to sing this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Torme’s, in Palm Springs. The inside word has it that they were looking for a New Face, New Voice and a real Jazz Vocalist. Michaelina will be there for at least the next two weekends. Break a leg.

Jazz Appreciation Workshop

Thursday afternoon I attended  a Jazz Appreciation Workshop at UNLV, held by jazz enthusiasts Wayne Echt and Chuck Carter. Both are quite knowledgeable and appreciate the art. Guest jazz singer and Las Vegas entertainer Lynn Ross, highlighted the music and lives of “Yesterday’s Ladies of Jazz”, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday.

Lynn not only educated us on the three singer’s lives, but entertained us in depth by singing numerous songs in the style of these great ladies of jazz. A polished Lynn sang classic hits such as; ‘Take the A Train, Satin Doll, God Bless the Child, Tenderly’ and many more. She was accompanied by accomplished guitarist John Falbo. The unrehearsed session was as smooth as any performance could be. The elegant and professional style of both Lynn and John was well appreciated by the 20 or so attendees.

Being into their sixth year, they must be doing something right. If anyone is interested in more information about this workshop, contact Wayne Echt at: wizardofjazz@aol.com.
