Etta James (vocals 1938 – present)
Etta James was born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles, California, on January 25, 1938. Dorothy, her mother, was just fourteen years old when she gave birth to James, and she never overtly named the father. James expressed her suspicion that her father was pool shark Minnesota Fats. She moved to San Francisco when she was 12. James confessed that San Francisco brought out her wild side, and she became involved with girl gangs. She also wanted to be a star, so James turned to music for refuge, and when she was fourteen she formed the Creolettes with two other girls. She made her recording debut at the age of 16 for Modern, and had a number-one R&B hit with her first record, ‘The Wallflower’ (a.k.a. “Roll With Me Henry”). She worked in rock’n’roll package tours throughout the 1950’s before signing with Chess Records in 1960 and scoring another big record with ‘At Last’. A versatile performer, Etta James can deliver the goods on lowdown blues, rockers and tender ballads, and won a blues Grammy in 2005.
