Wikipedia defines Flash Mob as “a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual…act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment, satire (or) artistic expression.” What a Flash Mob this was! Gathered at the recently opened Catfish Alley inside the Hawaiian Marketplace in front of Polo Towers on The Strip were Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis Jr. and Lamonte McLemore of the 5th Dimension, “Pip” Bubba Knight and Monty Rock III in his trademark leopard hat. And you could tell from the great threads on others that there were enough current and soon-to-be legends hanging around to give you a year’s worth of “Guess who I saw.”
Singing up a storm of oldies, Motown and buckets of mellow on the outdoor stage were Lisa Gay, Roy Hamilton Jr., Bobby Brooks Wilson and some surprises.
Domenick Allen, fresh from his successful Toys for Tots performances at the Sun Coast, showed up with his family and his clarinet. Domenick was joined on stage by his young daughter, Kaylie. Kaylie brought down the house and got a standing O at Sun Coast with her proud papa for her Rock Bach performance. This time, Domenick and Kaylie wowed the crowd with “Get Your Kicks on Route 66” but only after Kaylie Googled the lyrics on her iPhone.
Hey, this is THE place to be on Wednesday nights. The catfish, brisket and chicken are out of this world. If you’re lookin’ for greasy, sorry, you’ll have to find someplace else. And the greens! The greens! Best greens I’ve had since visiting a friends grandmom in Montgomery. AL back in 1970. More raves came were heaped on the peach cobbler and sweet potato fries. Owner Ken Browder made sure everybody got great service, a 6-foot smile and a “little samplin’ of somethin’ else.”
This is THE place to be on Wednesday evenings. Dress warm and bring your camera.
